A lot of business owners are spending money on marketing every month… but have no real idea if it’s actually working.
They’re posting on social media, running ads, maybe even paying for a website—but at the end of the day, it just feels like guessing.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Most businesses aren’t struggling because they aren’t doing marketing.
They’re struggling because they aren’t tracking what’s working.
First—what does “working” even mean?
Marketing “working” doesn’t mean:
- more likes
- more followers
- or just having ads running
It means one thing:
👉 Are you getting leads and customers from it?
If your marketing isn’t turning into phone calls, messages, bookings, or sales—then it’s not doing its job.
The 3 things you should actually be looking at
You don’t need to be an analytics expert. You just need to understand these basics:
1. Are people finding your business?
This is your visibility.
Ask yourself:
- Do I show up on Google when I search my services?
- Is my business showing up on Google Maps?
- Are people visiting my website?
If the answer is “no” or “I don’t know,” that’s your first problem.
Because if people can’t find you… they can’t hire you.
2. Are people taking action?
This is where most businesses get stuck.
Getting traffic is good—but what happens next matters more.
Look for things like:
- Phone calls
- Contact form submissions
- Messages on social media
- Appointment bookings
If people are visiting your site but not doing anything, something in your marketing or website isn’t clear enough.
Usually it’s:
- unclear messaging
- no strong call-to-action
- or a website that doesn’t guide people
3. Are those actions turning into customers?
This is the final step most people forget.
Not every lead becomes a customer—but you should at least know:
- How many leads are you getting per month?
- How many turn into paying customers?
- Where are your best leads coming from?
If you don’t know this, you’re making decisions blind.
And that usually leads to wasted money.
A simple way to think about it
Here’s the easiest breakdown:
- Visibility → Can people find you?
- Engagement → Are they interacting?
- Conversions → Are they becoming customers?
If one of these is missing, your marketing breaks down.
Why most businesses think marketing “doesn’t work”
It’s usually not that marketing failed.
It’s that:
- no tracking is set up
- no one is watching the numbers
- everything is being judged off “feelings”
So if it’s a slow week, marketing gets blamed.
If it’s a busy week, marketing gets credit (even if it wasn’t responsible).
That’s not a system—that’s guessing.
What you should do instead
You don’t need complicated dashboards or fancy reports.
Start simple:
- Make sure your website has tracking (Google Analytics)
- Know how many calls or leads you get each month
- Track where those leads come from (Google, Facebook, referrals, etc.)
- Focus more on what actually brings customers—not what looks good
Final thought
Marketing isn’t meant to feel confusing.
When it’s working, it becomes pretty simple:
👉 People find you
👉 People contact you
👉 People become customers
If that chain is broken anywhere, that’s where the problem is—not necessarily your entire marketing strategy.
